When the call of God comes knocking

When God’s call for your life comes, it will come to you alone. You must first understand why and what you have been called to. As you start the journey, the people God has chosen to work with you will line up. God prepares all the resources before you are called.

God’s call comes to people who are already engaged in something else. How can you be profitable in that which is of God when you have not been diligent in that which is secular? Being in ministry is not a cop out or something you picked up because you failed in other areas of life. No, God calls those who are already engaged in something else and are active in their engagement...

Mark 1:16-20 gives insight into this message:

V16: Be active in what you have been called to do until God calls you. Being in ministry is not for the lazy. Commitment is needed because at times, you will face challenging times. You must be resilient to fight till you get what you are looking for. Such tenacity is required. Your experience in a secular job is definitely needed in the arena of the spiritual.

V17: God’s mission is all about people. You therefore serve in ministry because of people. Don’t get this out of your mind. You are here to serve people. If you don’t serve the people, you invalidate your ministry. God wants the upliftment of His people a priority- hence in ministry, let your message encourage instead of discourage; motivate instead of demotivate; correct in love instead of pulling down etc. Whatever we do, we must build self esteem in people. Your ministry exists to serve people.

V18: your response must be immediate when the call comes. You don’t need to seek approval from no one. Notice the attitude of the disciples? “And at once they left their nets and [yielding up all claim to them] followed [with] Him [joining Him as disciples and siding with His party].” This means they left their trade or means of livelihood behind immediately. They also did not lay any further claim to that which they left behind - they did not mentally attach themselves to the past. They chose the future with Jesus. They became vulnerable as it were. They had the attitude “if we perish, we perish”. This is an attitude of commitment. When we are committed, we ourselves know we are committed. We draw a line in the sand and say “this is it”.. this is where we need to get to to make a success of what we have been called to do. If you keep floundering, it is because you are not yet committed, you are still looking at options A,B, C etc... have you ever seen people who get into marriage with options AB C etc? They never make anything out of that marriage. You can not be committed when you still have your options on the table..

V19: God’s call comes to the diligent. If you are not someone who plans ahead or prepares ahead, you have no business in ministry. Why? Because being a good administrator is mandatory to succeed in any enterprise. It is not enough to know how to build people up, you must learn to manage the resources God has bestowed into your hand. If you are not prudent or if you are a waster, then you will mess up whatever resources God has placed in your hand. This is why it is crucial for you to learn these skills in the secular job before delving into ministry. Learn to be an organised person. Learn to be someone who gets to appointments on time. Learn to be someone who manages your time very well. Learn to be someone who sets the right prioritise for your life... you see the enormity of this, don’t you? Essentially, you are God’s CEO for His business and you better lead and manage well.

V20: you need to put things in order before you commit to full time. This means, don’t transition from your current role/job in a rough shod manner. Handover properly. Put order in place. Transition in a way that where or what you are leaving behind can still succeed after you are no longer there. This is why it is extremely important to transition peacefully without leaving grudges behind. God is a God of order and we must emulate Him.
