How to know that you abide in God

In John 15:7, Jesus says: If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

Two conditions are stated here for answered prayers by Jesus: 1) Abiding in Jesus, and 2) the words of Jesus abiding in you. The word “abide” means to “continue to be present,” but these words of Jesus were said to those who are not yet born again.

What is the condition for abiding in Him? The gift of the Holy Spirit living in us. 1 John 4:13 reads: ”By this, we come to know (perceive, recognise, and understand) that we abide (live and remain) in Him and He in us: because He has given (imparted) to us of His [Holy] Spirit.“

Since no one before the resurrection of Jesus could have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of them, we can say the disciples could not really abide in Him. But on the other side of the cross, we have received the Holy Spirit, hence we already abide in Him (See John 20:22 where Jesus imparted the Holy Spirit to the disciples after His resurrection)

So the question that remains to be answered is this: Are His words abiding in you? When we make His words abide in us, then we will ask what we will, and it shall be granted.

How do we get His words to abide (continue to be present) in us? Through the study of and meditation on His words. This was what God told Joshua in Joshua 1:8.

Make the study of and meditation on the word of God a priority; make it a lifestyle; then you can have the boldness to ask what you will, and it shall be granted. Nothing replaces the study of the Word. Prayer does not. Fasting does not.
