“In union with Christ you were circumcised, not with the circumcision that is made by human beings, but with the circumcision made by Christ, which consists of being freed from the power of this sinful self.” Colossians‬ â€2‬:â€11‬ â€GNT‬‬

Under the old covenant, circumcision served as the proof of the covenant rights the Israelites enjoyed. Circumcision had the same significance as the token of the rainbow in the Noahic covenant. The rainbow provided assurance that God will never destroy the earth again by the flood. No one ever looks at the rainbow and doubts that!

Under the new covenant, this text says that we have something better than bodily circumcision - and that is - the freedom from the sinful self! In Christ, God severed or stripped off the old Adamic sinful nature and replaced that with His own nature! Where did this happen? In your spirit! The real “you” is spirit and that spirit is the Spirit of Jesus (Rom 8:9, Rom 6:6-7).

If you can trust God to keep His promise tokenised by the rainbow and the Israelites can be assured of their covenant rights because of the bodily circumcision, then under the new covenant, you should not ever doubt this truth: God has severed off your old sinful nature! You are free to choose to please God - every time. You are no longer a slave to sin! Selah!
