To be perfectly righteous is nothing short of the righteousness of God Himself - and that righteousness can never be attained by good works, ascetism or outward show of piousness.

Jesus says in Matthew 5:20 that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees, you can never enter the kingdom of God. Then He proceeded to show what God’s perfect righteousness means by elevating “anger above murder”, “lust above adultery”, “speaking the truth above swearing an oath”, “loving your enemies above loving your neighbours”

Jesus ended that sermon by saying in v48: “So you must be good in every way, as your Father above is good in every way.’” So, how can you be this good like God? Is it by striving to keep over 600 laws in the bible? No! You can’t do it. To be good like God, you would have to be as righteous as He is. How do you become as righteous as God is? God had to impart to you His own righteousness in order for Him to qualify you. You can’t work for it!

The Good News is this: the very day you became born again, you were sealed with God’s righteousness! 2 Cor 5:21. In your spirit, you are as righteous as God is. You are the very righteousness of God. You have received His perfect righteousness. Praise God!
